Did you know that the emergency services has one of the highest rates of suicide and suicide attempts than any other profession?  If you work in this field, I am sure you probably could have guessed.

Post Traumatic Stress, Critical Incident Stress, & Compassion Fatigue can all cause depression.  Serious depression left untreated can result in suicide.  This is an area in the emergency services that can be vicious to the care givers psyche.  It is also an area that is often over-looked, if not ignored by the profession as a whole.

The police profession has embraced the issues of depression and suicide and has even  started several organizations to care for it's own.  They know that this is not an embarrassing problem that should be covered up and forgotten.  If the police are trying to stop the self-inflicted deaths of their own, then the fire and ems services should too.

Because Firefighter Ministries cares about the well being of the firefighters and ems across the country and around the world, we believe it is time to bring this special area into light and educate the emergency services about personal prevention, loved-one prevention, and survival.

In the last twenty years, there have been many positive changes in law enforcement. Years ago, officers were taken off foot posts, and placed in patrol cars. Now, officers are being returned to the community in order to get to know the people, and to work with them, so together, they can solve the community's problems.

Twenty years ago, an officer with an alcohol problem was hidden from view. Now, many departments have employee assistance programs to help the officer. Officers with marital problems could not get help from the department. Admitting that you had any type of personal problem was tantamount to saying you could not handle the job.
